Capitolo 3 The active ferries on the Great Canal

3 - San Marcuola
pag.  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

The ferry in Campo S.Marcuola.

This ferry links the sestieri of Cannaregio (from S. Marcuola) and S. Croce (from the fontego). This last sestiere, furthermore, is rich of those so much exalted and suggestive corners of the socalled minor Venice. For many Venetians, passing from S. Marcuola to fontego means moving from the main Strada Nova - Ferrovia to that Rialto - Piazzale Roma (or Ferrovia). And vice versa.

The ferry at Fontego.

At the Fontego landing place one can find the entrance to the natural History Museum, that is situated in the same building. The Fontego dei Turchi was a logistic basis for the Turkish merchants who stayed in the city; it was the site , hotel and store. The building had this function from 1621 to 1838. Going on in the long "calle del Fontego" one can go on the route of march Rialto- Ferrovia and it is easy to reach the church of S. Zan Degol (S. Giovanni Decollato) or that of S. Giacomo dell'Orio, on the homonymous campo.
From campo S.Marcuola (San Marcuola is the Venetian popularization of "SS. Ermagora and Fortunato") one can reach "Rio Ter S. Leonardo", on the route of march Strada Nova - Ferrovia. From here one can go to Ca' Vendramin Calergi palace, winter site of Casin of Venice, or to the more inside areas of Cannaregio, as for example to the famous "Ghetto degli Ebrei".
