Capitolo 3 The active ferries on the Great Canal

9 - Dogana
pag.  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

The ferry at Dogana.

This ferry allows to go from area S. Mark's Square to the extreme point of the sestiere of Dorsoduro. It is useful because, if from the side of Dorsoduro one wants to go back to the central areas like S. Mark or Rialto, on foot the only way would be that to go back one's steps and cross the Great Canal at the Accademia bridge, to go , then, along the routes S. Stefano - S. Mark or Accademia - Rialto. By this ferry, on the contrary, one can go speedily near S. Mark's Square.

The Punta della Dogana and the church of Salute.

From the side of Punta della Dogana, one can take 2 directions:to the Church of Salute and then to S. Vio and the Accademia, or along the Zattere, following a "walk" traditional of the Venetians, but loved also by the tourists, since this long piece of fondamente is exposed to the sun and ends to the Giudecca. Through this canal pass the cruising ships directed to the port that is at the opposed end of the sestiere. On the first way at the Zattere there are the "Magazzini del Sale", now used by by the Biennale d'Arte of Venice for initiatives and exhibitions. In both cases( direction Salute or Zattere) one can penetrate the calli and inside fondamente, pleasant and rich of suggestive corners walk in a Venice extremely calm and relaxed. The Zattere owe its name to the fact that berthed here the "zattere" loaded with wood.

The traghetto at Calle Vallaresso.

From the side of Calle Vallaresso, on the contrary, one finds in front of himself 2 possibilities. Going on along the narrow calle(at the entrance of which one can find the mythical"Harry's Bar")and reaching Salizzada S. Mois and from here going to Sestiere or entering the square, or go along the fondamenta del Molo and find so the entrance of the Piazzetta S. Marco. From here one can go on along the "rive"( of Schiavoni, of Ca' di Dio, etc.) coasting the Bacino and the Canale di S. Marco, along another walk in wide open spaces very loved by Venetians.
